Course Completion Requirements

1.Master’s Degree Program
a) Credits Required for Graduation
30 credits, including 2 credits for Research in Major I

b) Curriculum Structure
Mandatory completion of two core courses: Microeconomics I and Macroeconomics I

c) Additional Rule
Students may not take more than three courses taught by the same instructor during their enrollment period

2.Doctoral Degree Program

a) Credits Required for Graduation
30 credits (applies to students admitted from 2018 onward), including 2 credits for Research in Major II and 2 credits for Research in Major III

b) Curriculum Structure
Mandatory completion of two core courses: Microeconomics II and Macroeconomics II

c) Additional Rule
Students may not take more than three courses taught by the same instructor during their enrollment period.

3.Integrated Master’s and Doctoral Degree Program

a) Credits Required for Graduation
60 credits, including 2 credits for Research in Major II and 2 credits for Research in Major III

b) Curriculum Structure
Mandatory completion of four core courses: Microeconomics I, Microeconomics II, Macroeconomics I, and Macroeconomics II

A maximum of six courses taught by the same professor/instructor may be taken during enrollment.
※ Prerequisite courses are designated by the department, upon faculty meeting deliberation, to supplement a lack of foundational knowledge in the current major due to differences in curriculum for students entering the master’s or doctoral program from a different major, foreign universities, or specialized/professional graduate schools. However, exceptions are made for students with a minor, double major, or an equivalent major.

– Master’s Program: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Money and Banking
– Doctoral Program: Microeconomics I, Macroeconomics I, Econometrics I
– Integrated Master’s-Doctoral Program: Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Mathematical Economics, Money and Banking

※ Courses taken in a lower-level program will not be recognized for credit in the current program.
– Doctoral students cannot earn credits for courses taken in the master’s program.
– Master’s students cannot earn credits for undergraduate-level courses.

※ The maximum number of credits allowed from courses offered by other departments is:
– 9 credits for the Master’s Program,
– 12 credits for the Doctoral Program, and
– 18 credits for the Integrated Master’s-Doctoral Program.

※ Students who wish to take courses at other domestic or international graduate schools that have academic agreements with this graduate school must obtain approval from the relevant department chair and permission from both graduate school deans.
– A maximum of 6 credits per semester may be taken,
– with an overall limit of 9 credits for the Master’s Program, and
– 12 credits for the Doctoral and Integrated Master’s-Doctoral Programs.

Review and Submission of Degree Papers

1.Master’s Program

a) Eligibility for Thesis Submission
i) Students who have completed or are expected to complete the master’s program at this graduate school
ii) Students who have passed the master’s thesis qualification exam
iii) Students who have not exceeded the thesis submission deadline
iv) Students who meet additional requirements as stipulated by their respective department regulations
v) Students who have completed the Research Ethics and Thesis Writing course and submitted the Pledge of Research Ethics
vi) Students who have checked the similarity of their thesis through the Thesis Plagiarism Detection System and submitted the similarity report

b) Thesis Submission Procedure

Students who meet the thesis submission qualifications must submit the following documents to the graduate school in accordance with the academic calendar:
– Thesis Submission Approval Form – 1 copy
– Master’s Thesis (for preliminary review, to be submitted to the Institute of Economic Research) – 3 copies
– Undergraduate graduation certificate and master’s transcript – 1 copy each
– Research Achievement Recognition Form – 1 copy

2.Doctoral Program
a) Eligibility for Thesis Submission
i) Students who have completed or are expected to complete the master’s program at this graduate school
ii) Students who have passed the doctoral thesis qualification examination
iii) Students who have published or been accepted for publication of at least one paper in a domestic or international peer-reviewed academic journal (KCI candidate journal or higher), either as the sole author, lead author, or the first author excluding the professor (if a departmental exception is recognized under faculty performance evaluation guidelines, that shall apply)
iv) Students who meet additional requirements as stipulated by their respective department regulations
v) Students who have not exceeded the thesis submission deadline. However, in cases where a valid reason arises in the final semester of the maximum enrollment period—such as the advisor’s overseas training, change in student status, student’s public-interest overseas training, overseas study or employment, or more than three months of medical treatment at a general hospital—the submission deadline may be extended up to one year. Likewise, if the student exceeded the deadline due to mandatory military service after program completion, the period of service may be added to the deadline.
vi) Students who have passed the thesis proposal (proposal defense)
vii) Students who have completed the Research Ethics and Thesis Writing course and submitted the Pledge of Research Ethics
viii) Students who have confirmed the similarity of their thesis via the Thesis Plagiarism Detection System and submitted the similarity report

b) Thesis Submission Procedure
i) Approval Form for Thesis Submission – 1 copy
ii) Doctoral Dissertation (for preliminary review: to be submitted to the Economics Research Institute) – 5 copies
iii) Certificate of Research Achievement – 1 copy
iv) Certificate of Master’s Degree and Transcripts for Both Master’s and Doctoral Programs – 1 copy each

Master’s / Combined Bachelor-Master Program
Graduates of the Master’s and Combined Bachelor-Master programs in the Department of Economics at Chung-Ang University have pursued doctoral studies in economics at universities abroad or secured positions as professional researchers at government-funded research institutes, private think tanks, specialized organizations, and public corporations.
